“Why should you believe?” is a YouTube podcast series aiming to investigate 21st century alienation.
Hosted by Fernanda Cerávolo from LabForGirls, the premiere episode features psychoanalyst Marília Velano and explores procrastination and the struggles young people face in projecting the future, challenging concepts of performance.
The series is on @BobFernandes’s YouTube channel and on Spotify.
We debate with thinkers and professionals from various specialties on paths and methods to escape the alienation that a new, uniform standard of power imposes on all us. A kind of “techno-political-global-local” power.
The premier interview features the psychoanalyst and psychologist Marília Velano. Velano talks about the cognitive disconnects that occur between the desire to do something and the long journey until completion in our fast-paced routines.
Many of us call this “procrastination”. For her, however, it is not so catastrophic.
Velano states, “Our model for approaching performance is a machine model.” She views indecision as a positive and productive thing. “Society often tries to make us see it as a weakness”. She defends the practice of taking breaks to “do things that make no sense, without clear objectives” as a genuine form of emptying the mind and recovering.
She also observes that young people struggle, more than they used to, to project into the future, stating, “Not out of pessimism, but because time is compressed.”
Something done last week becomes something distant, done ‘a loooong time ago.’ It is a phenomenon related to our contemporary difficulty with ‘daydreaming’—with creating anticipatory images of the future we face.”
